The story focuses on the activities of the three species in a part of the Milky Way known as the Koprulu Sector. Set in the future, on planets far from Earth, it features three races: the human Terrans, the psionic Protoss and the bestial Zerg. Blizzard released an expansion later in 1998, StarCraft: Brood War, commonly acknowledged to have correct many game balance issues and leading the way to its eventual recognition as standard to which all other RTS games are compared to.

If you've played other real-time strategy games - such as the Warcraft or Command & Conquer series - you can surmise the goals of all three races here: collect resources to build up your offenses and defenses, then crush the enemy completely. For the Nintendo 64 game, see StarCraft 64.
#Starcraft 64 movie#
The Protoss are technologically advanced aliens that possess psionic powers and command robotic drones, and the Zerg borrow extensively from the horrifying creatures from the movie Aliens. Playing as the Terrans means mobility, resourcefulness, and speaking with a heavy and often exaggerated Southern accent. Terrans, who are essentially humans who have colonized space looking to renew their dwindling resources, have run into two unfriendly species equally as bent on total dominat ion. Each has its own unique missions, playing style, units, and personality. In Starcraft 64, you can play as one of three races: the Terrans, Protoss, or the Zerg. The game's 50-plus missions can make you into a Howard Hughes-level recluse if you choose to accept them. Starcraft 64 collects all of the missions from the original Starcraft and its "half-sequel," the Brood War add-on pack, and offers up a handful of N64-specific stages. Though the value of this long-delayed port of Blizzard's excellent sci-fi strategy title may fail to impress PC owners, those who keep their gaming to the television should be well pleased. Each of the three races follows its own storyline and features special playable hero characters in addition to its distinct standard unit types.įor those that love Starcraft (PC), Starcraft 64 is the perfect game! The playing field maps are essentially two-dimensional, though plateaus and valleys can hinder movement or offer advantages to wisely positioned units. Though the game is set in a science-fiction future of interplanetary exploration and interstellar travel, the battles take place on the solid ground of large space platforms and planet surfaces.

Each race faces both of the other two at some point, but some interesting alliances can develop later in the game as well. By providing a choice of three very different armies to take to war (as opposed to the two tactically identical factions offered in earlier real-time strategies), StarCraft unlocks several new layers of strategic possibilities. The Zerg are creatures of a hive mentality that can reproduce voraciously and quickly mutate to accomplish different goals. The Protoss are a race of noble heritage, advanced in technology and slow to change from their tried and true ways. The Terrans are "regular" humans, known for their ability to move quickly and adapt to their surroundings.

Gamers will need the N64 Expansion Pak to play the Brood War levels or battle against a friend in the game's unique split-screen multiplayer mode. The only version of the game on any console, StarCraft 64 features missions from the original PC game and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set as well as new missions designed specifically for this edition, for a total of 60 different levels. Based directly on Blizzard's extremely popular 1998 science fiction PC real-time strategy game, the adaptive Terrans, solemn Protoss, and pervasive Zerg craft war on the virtual battlefields of the Nintendo 64 in this release.
